Gita Chapter 17 - Faith

-Krishna narrates different kinds of faith, food, sacrifice, penance, austerities, charity and chanting of OHM TAT SAT corresponding to the three characters.

1. Follow the principles of the worship according to Sastras and avoid anything as a separate imagination.

2. One's faith can be of three kinds- in goodness, in passion or in ignorance (Satvam Rajas, Tamas ).

3. Due to different types of faith, different kinds of worship have caused, but all in good faith only.

4. Worshipping supreme personality is always the best and worshipping ghosts and spirits may be avoided.

5. Any penance or austerities performed just for pride, egoism, lust, and with attachment is of no use .

6. Violation of injunctions of scriptures by dreadful pursuits by anybody is not to be encouraged for ever.

7, Preference of food, sacrifice, austerities, charity differs among men and is not in scriptures.

8. Juicy and fatty foods provide men with healthy and satisfying.

9. Salty, bitter, hot, pungent, dry, sour, and burning foods cause misery, distress and disease.

10. Old and tasteless food will not increase duration of life, nor purify the mind and nor give strength.

11. Any sacrifice must be done as found in scriptures and without any expectation of its results.

12. Sacrifice or rituals which are done for pride and material benefit is not to be taken as a great one.

13. Acts should be done as found in scriptures, with sincere chanting, proper remunerations and due respects.

14. One should practice cleansing oneself externally and internally and should learn simplicity.

15. Talk only Truth, pleasing, beneficial, from abundant Vedic literature, and avoid violent talks .

16. The mind should be devoid of duplicity and one should think of only the welfare of all living things.

17. Austerity observed in faith and with full dedication, but without expectations is ever appreciable. .

18. Artificial penance done just for pride, gaining respect, honor, and worship is of no use at all.

19. Do not make any penance out of foolishness with self-torture to destroy or injure others.

20. Charity without consideration of its return, at the proper time and place to a deserving person is best.

21. Charity made with self desire grudging and in desire of its fruits of actions is just a waste.

22. Charities are to be done only to worthy men, in a pure place, in fervent attention and in good respects.

23. One who acts without following the regulations prescribed in scriptures may not attain Truth.

24. Charities, sacrifices, penances may be done in as per the scriptural regulations, starting with Ohm. .

25. Do not observe anything merely for material gains but should aim at things other than Material bondage.

26. Acts of sacrifice, penance, charity are perfect and complete if they are performed in true nature.

27. A noble deed firmly established in sacrifice, charity, austerity and for the sake of Truth is welcoming one.

28. Deep faith and appropriate guidance from guru are essential, for good deeds performed, and in giving gifts.
